Who knows? In other news, I've been slowly (and I mean slowly) working through my Japanese novel, and testing the waters with Latin to sort of sample how grad work in Classics would go. I'm still a huge Utada fan, I could do those. What about more lyrically tough peeps like Tokyo Jihen? I'd also really like to do the entirety of Akino Arai's Furu Platinum album, as I've literally been listening to that since I was an emo little 19 year-old going to community college. Lunacy would be an album I could probably translate the rest of. Being mainly interested in them because of the awesome that is Sugizo and Inoran, I sort of assumed Luna Sea would have the typical J-Rock "Dakishimetaiiiiiiiiii" ad nauseam (omg omg omg I know what that means) but it seems like there might be more there. Luna Sea also doesn't seem to have it's own blog devotee working on their translations, and I was pleasantly surprised with the lyrics to "Feel".

Only problem is that the only album I have a hard copy of, Rivuscoru or whatever it's called, hasn't really worked it's way into me as much as most of the others yet, and I'd only be putting my admittedly amateurish spin on something someone much more professional has done if I re-do the first three albums. Maybe the Back Horn? As far as I know there's no blog with many of their translations other than the legendary Utau-Inu even j-pop asia doesn't have that many. I feel like I could generate a little more interest by having a monopoly on an artist.

So far I'm really enjoying translating these songs, right now I've just done a smattering of songs I've liked for ages (two more are more or less complete, and just waiting for me to actually sit down with the lyric booklets and work out any final nuances.). Thinking about putting in romaji lyrics, in case anyone wants to sing along or something.Īll of the original lyrics belong to the guys in Luna Sea and their respective label(s) I own nothing except my admittedly poor translation. I'm basically aiming to unveil this blog on Facebook once I hit and edit around 10 lyric translations, so we're about halfway there. I know every post has an "I'll fix this later" note in the bottom, but it's true, honest. Japanese doesn't have spaces, so adding them adds a certain visual element to the lyrics that you can't do very well in English, in some spots above I have them separated by commas, in others by a forward slash. Lastly, the way the lyrics are broken up is very difficult to do in English. Since I've never heard sultry used in real life I've chosen not to use it. The thesaurus gave me "sultry", "sweltering", and "feverish". I think since this song is pretty much a graphic description of love makin' he's probably going for the temperature idea, but it's still very hard to get around the double meaning in English. I'm thinking "could" might work, though it seems more uncertain than the actual lyrics and I like the way the first line comes out (what is "fragile" other than "looks like it will break").Īlso, Ryuuichi uses the word "atsui" (Japanese for something of a hot, uh, temperature) all over the place here. If I translate it straight and just write "Your heart looks like it could break open" I feel like we're no longer in Ryuuichi's world, and all of a sudden in the checkout line at Wal-Mart (nah Wal-Mart cashiers aren't that nice). *Some of the lines over here seem a little odd because I'm trying to render the "looks like" grammar construct. Making Love: If I love you, I'll shine, into eternity In the Passion: We'll never let go (lit:part) Making Love: Your everything, I'll kiss it to eternity In the Passion: The scent of us entangled Making Love: Feverishly, our breath (lit:the breath of hot us) leads us to everything Making Love: Your everything, I’ll kiss it into eternity Making Love: If I love you, it’s okay to throw everything away In the Passion: This pretty finger’s dance suits you Making Love: Your hot, wet flesh (lit:skin) In the Passion: In eternity, I want to forever melt with you Making Love: Born, as you are, in that shape I love you but/still/you’re fragile (you seem like you’ll break) and In the Passion: I’ll drown, save me (lit: save the me that’s going to drown) with your hot kiss Making Love: Negative dancing in this world
