Warships are especially prone to the spread of infections: last April more than 1,000 crew members of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle tested positive for covid-19. This is the first coronavirus outbreak to occur on a Spanish Navy ship since the pandemic began last March. The sources consulted admit that "probably" someone skipped the isolation measures on the occasion of the Christmas holidays. The Navy ensures that the Hespérides crew had complied with the protocol prior to any navigation: PCR, quarantine and a new PCR, with a negative result before boarding. The Ministries of Defense and Science and Innovation are in contact to readjust the campaign program, which was to last from February to April at the Gabriel de Castilla base, on the Antarctic peninsula, taking advantage of the southern summer. It is planned to carry out a PCR on the entire crew (since the rapid tests have little reliability) and, if no new cases are detected, subject the ship to isolation for up to 10 days in the port of Las Palmas.Ībout 50 military personnel are traveling aboard the Hespérides since the scientific personnel had planned to join, by air, during the ship's stopover in Punta Arenas (Chile) on the 30th. "After carrying out the rapid test and close contact tracking tests on those close to those affected, no new cases have been detected and the personnel isolation measures have been extreme and the anti-covid-19 protocol has been activated," says the Navy.Ī lounge, a bar and a class: this is how the coronavirus spreads in the air The Hespérides sailed on December 30 from Cartagena (Murcia) to start the 26 Antarctic campaign.Īlready at sea, several crew members began to have symptoms compatible with covid-19 and they were tested positively. In principle, there are four positive cases: a noncommissioned officer, two corporals and a sailor. The Navy has ordered the diversion of the oceanographic vessel Hespérides to the port of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) after detecting an outbreak of covid-19 in the crew.
